Whiplash is a common spinal injury for people involved in auto collisions. Though Whiplash is most associated with the neck it can also occur in the mid and low back.
When a car is struck by another vehicle or collides with an object the body is violently snapped back and forth. This causes the muscles and ligaments to over extend, leading to tearing of the tissue. This is referred to as soft tissue damage (bones are hard tissue), and can cause stiffness, soreness and pain. Whiplash will also cause structural damage such as misaligned vertebrae, herniated, bulging or ruptured discs, or nerve damage due to the over extension from the violent movement.
Chiropractic is the most appropriate treatment for whiplash injuries. Spinal adjustments, specific spinal stretching and exercise are necessary for proper healing.
Proper Chiropractic care following an accident will minimize the initial discomfort and pain of the soft tissue injury and maximize the long term healing. Furthermore, it will help avoid future spinal degeneration of the injured spinal areas.
